Tom Lyle's The Scarlet Spider

If you asked me when I was 10 who my favorite comic book artist was, I’d have told you Tom Lyle. 


I still have the Tom Lyle trade issues of Spider-Man that my grandma bought me as a kid. I look through them every now again. Tom’s art had a lot to do with why I dreamed of being a comic book artist. When I got to college, I had the amazing opportunity of having Tom as a professor. I was star struck by him. I ended up taking 6 classes with him and often times would come up with reasons to go and talk to him in his office. Anything I worked on, I wanted his input. He’d welcome my questions and never turned me away. He had nothing but patience and genuine care for helping me. He pushed me to be an artist…something I couldn’t consider myself prior to having him as a professor. As an aspiring artist, I’ve always had a lot of influences, and I've developed a lot through studying great artists but Tom is who taught me how to draw, how to develop my skill and how to tell a story.
